Hyperhidrosis is the abnormal or excessive sweating that occurs without exercise, this sweating is so exaggerated that it could soak your clothes or drip down the palms of your hands.
Hyperhidrosis can affect hands, feet, armpits and face. It occurs once a day on both sides of the body.
Sometimes this problem can be calmed with very strong antiperspirants, however, this treatment usually does not work at all, that is why it may be recommended to the patient the application of botulinum toxin type A, blocking the chemical messengers or undergo surgery to permanently eliminate the excess sweating.
Hyperhidrosis surgery is performed through videothoracoscopy making two small incisions in the armpits placing a special camera that will allow us to see the chest inside to find the nerve that is responsible for leveling sweating, once found the nerve is cut at a certain level to eliminate excessive sweating.
Surgical treatment is advisable when the patient has tried different treatments, such as the use of antiperspirants and botulinum toxin without being able to control the problem.
With this procedure we will achieve the elimination of sweating permanently.
General anesthesia is recommended for this procedure.
Once the procedure has been performed, the patient can eat normally, he/she is advised to take medication for pain, inflammation and to avoid infections. The patient should be alert to warning signs such as shortness of breath, swelling or pain that does not subside with analgesics.
It can last from 1 hour to 3 hours approximately. The patient is discharged within 12 to 24 hours after surgery.
The best candidates are considered to be those patients suffering from excessive localized sweating mainly on the hands, face and in some cases also axillary sweating problems where previous treatments have not worked.
When the surgical procedure is performed, the results are permanent.
It is applied by means of microinjections applied directly to the area to be treated, giving very fast and satisfactory results thanks to the selective blocking of the function of the sweat glands.
Local anesthesia is applied to the patient before the procedure, in the case of the armpits, anesthesia is not usually necessary in case of needing it can be applied to the patient, remember that the pain will depend on the threshold of each patient.
It is a non-invasive procedure and very easy to apply, there is no recovery time.
It can last from 30 minutes to approximately 60 minutes and is performed in the doctor's office.
The treatment should be repeated every 6-9 months, since the effect of the botulinum toxin is temporary. The decrease in sweating, practically total, begins a few days after treatment.
